Far-right hooligans attack migrants on Lesvos, turn town into battleground
Police forced dozens of migrants, most Afghan asylum-seekers, who had been camped out on the main square of Lesvos island's capital since last week, onto buses and transported them to the Moria camp in the early hours of Monday after downtown Mytilini turned into a battleground on Sunday.

A municipal worker in Mytilene, the main port of Lesvos, hoses down a central square on Thursday. Migrants have been gathering in the square since Tuesday to protest overcrowding at state-run reception centers and demanding to be allowed to leave the island.

Protesting migrants occupy square in Lesvos capital
About 200 migrants and refugees, most of them from Afghanistan, reportedly spent the night at the central square of Mytiline, capital of Lesvos island in the eastern Aegean, following a march Tuesday to protest delays in processing applications and living conditions at the notoriously overcrowded Moria hotspot.
Surge in migrant flow to islands
In the last few days more than 500 refugees and migrants have arrived on the islands of the northern Aegean, particularly Lesvos, after setting out from the Turkish coast, according to the latest data.
A total of 318 people landed on Lesvos, 94 on Chios and 125 on Samos in the period stretching from last Wednesday to Monday.
