The Nuclear Regulation Agency (NRA) has officially granted Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) a permit for the storage of fresh RWFA-type nuclear fuel produced by Westinghouse, according to an announcement on January 24. This development marks a crucial step in the plant's efforts to diversify its sources of nuclear fuel and enhance operational flexibility.

Two ships carrying reprocessed nuclear fuel destined for Japan set sail on Sept. 17 from northern France, despite criticism from environmental campaigners.

The fuel was due to leave the northern French port city of Cherbourg earlier this month but was delayed by the breakdown of loading equipment.

France has found traces of radioactive cesium on mushrooms imported from Russia, the head of French nuclear regulator ASN said on Thursday, quoted by Reuters. 

Russia’s meteorological service has confirmed “extremely high” concentrations of the radioactive isotope ruthenium-106 were found in several parts of the country in late September, confirming European reports about the contamination this month.

South Korea and the United States reached a deal on April 22 to revise a 40-year-old civil nuclear pact that gives the Asian country limited freedom to produce fuel for power generation but continues to curb its ability to reprocess spent fuel.
