Follow the tastes of fall

The question was simple: "Just the season for (fill in the blank). Where to savor it best?" I was called by the Turkish edition of daily Hürriyet to take part in a survey of food writers to determine the much sought after tastes of fall. 

Ancient Akkale to be restored

Officials have pushed the button on a project for the restoration and environmental arrangement of the ancient city of Akkale, an olive oil production and exportation center in the late Roman era in the southern province of Mersin's Erdemli district.  

19 Greek olive oils are rocking it internationally – winning Gold! (see rankings)

Nineteen Greek olive oils ranked amongst the world’s best at this year’s new York International Olive Oi Competition (NYIOOC). Twelve of these were given Gold Award status, marking a record year for Greece and Greek producers at the annual event.

The Unseen Museum presents an ‘unusual marble utensil’

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens will present to the public another item from its extensive storerooms, an unusual marble utensil whose uses are still remain unclear.

The artifact is a marble slab with a miniature model of an ancient olive press that served as cover of a box which was used to collect money, probably linked to the production of olive oil.

Actually, one day is never enough to learn from experts why production has fallen despite the fact that the number of olive trees has increased and how climate change has affected olive production. 

The olive is life

There is something beyond the Mediterranean Sea that bounds the countries sharing its shores: The olive. The olive tree is mentioned from the Torah to the Bible and eventually in the Quran. In the Quran it is mentioned as the "?ecere-i Tayyibe," a beneficial fruitful tree, or functional if it can be described as such.

Irish man takes Greece to court over 1.5-mln-euro tax penalty

Éamonn Donnellan, from Culkeen, Cloonfad, Co Roscommon,took action against Greece after he was stopped at the Greek port of Patras in July 2002. A search of the truck’s cargo revealed 176,000 packs of contraband cigarettes as well as his stated cargo of olive oil, destined for a supermarket chain in Ireland.
