Bulgaria's new interim ombudsman will be appointed by the parliament today. Diana Kovacheva, who was formerly Maya Manolova's deputy, will be sworn in.

She will hold the position until the election of a new national public defender. Manolova deposited her resignation in order to enter the upcoming mayoral battle of Sofia.

There are four candidates for mayor of Sofia who have so far said they will fight for the post.

For current mayor Yordanka Fandakova, this will be a battle for a fourth term. As she entered this race, she said that Sofia's development was a cause for her and "long-distance running", in which maintaining the pace was important.

Maya Manolova resigns as an Ombudsman to run for mayor of Sofia. She announced this herself late Monday with a video uploaded to Facebook. The Ombudsman's press centre announced that she would deposit her resignation to the National Assembly at 15:30 today.

Today, Maya Manolova is expected to resign as ombudsman and enter the race for mayor post in Sofia.

Manolova's nomination will be launched by an Initiative Committee. The BSP has not yet decided whether they will apply or support Maya Manolova.
