Evros residents denounce visiting migration minister

Residents of Orestiada in the Evros border region in northwestern Greece greeted visiting Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis on Monday with a hail of stones, firecrackers, eggs and plastic cups of coffee to express their opposition to government plans to increase the capacities of the local reception and identification center for asylum seekers and the pre-departure detention facility.

Expulsions of extremists show government’s sensitivity

Foreign media and some politicians in Europe have rushed to criticize Greece for the way it is treating the refugees and migrants stuck at the Greek-Turkish border in Evros. Without wanting to gloss over the situation or conceal possible isolated incidents, the reality is that the Greek state is managing a very difficult situation, not only with efficiency but also calmly and responsibly.

Complaints filed over pushback claims at Evros border

The Greek Council for Refugees has filed a complaint with the Supreme Court in Athens over claims of violent pushbacks at the northeastern Evros border with Turkey.

In an announcement on Wednesday, the GCR said that its complaint includes a file of evidence supporting the claims of several migrants and asylum seekers who said they were forced back over the border into Turkey.
