Amid blistering heatwaves sweeping across the country, resulting in record-breaking temperatures and triggering wildfires, Agriculture and Forestry Ministry has raised concerns over the alarming surge in water consumption, urging citizens to use water judiciously.

As Türkiye has experienced water stress, if necessary precautions are not taken, the country might become water poor by 2030, stated Agriculture and Forestry Minister Vahit Kirişçi.

Türkiye's most populous province of Istanbul has been selected as the ninth dirtiest city in the world in terms of the amount of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) present in the air, a U.S. report has showed.

During the months of March and April, the levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air in Sofia decreased significantly. Only on some of the largest intersections the levels are exceeded. This was explained to TOPNOVINI.BG by Stefan Dimitrov from the civil organization Airsofia.info.

In 2018, 5 425 million cubic meters of fresh water are abstracted in the country, which is 4.1% less than in 2017. Most notable is the reduction of surface water abstracted (4.3%), which accounts for about 90% of freshwater abstracted.

The levels of nitrogen dioxide in Sofia are twice higher than the norm. The data was exported from the AirBG platform. According to them, the main reason is car traffic. The most polluted places are the busy intersections like the one at Eagle Bridge. Statistics show that 75,000 people die in Europe each year due to nitrogen dioxide.
