An 80-year-old man accused of causing four fires in northeastern Attica on August 11 has been remanded in custody pending trial after testifying before an investigating magistrate.

The 80-year-old man who was arrested Sunday, August 11, for causing fires in Glyka Waters was found to be in custody after pleading guilty. The 80-year-old man faces charges of arson with intent and aggravated arson.

The accused allegedly set four fires in Glyka Nera on August 11 the same day as the massive fire in Varnavas.

On Wednesday, the 80-year-old man, who was arrested on a warrant, will plead guilty before an investigating magistrate to causing four fires in Glyka Nera last Sunday, August 11.

A prosecutor on Thursday charged a 35-year-old man with unintended arson over a wildfire that started in the Glyka Nera area of East Attica on Wednesday. 

The man is alleged to be one of the four people arrested by police on Wednesday. The suspects are said to have been flying a drone that fell in the area, causing the blaze.

Fire service officials have arrested a man accused of operating the drone that likely caused the wildfire in the East Attica area of Glyka Nera on Wednesday.

Authorities have detained four people in connection with a fire that broke out on Wednesday, shortly after 2 p.m., in the East Attica suburb of Glyka Nera, according to reports.

The mayor of Paiania, of which Glyka Nera is a part, Isidoros Madis, told Kathimerini that according to an eyewitness, the fire was likely caused by a drone that crashed into the foothills of Mount Ymittos.

A wildfire broke out Wednesday afternoon on Mount Ymittos, near Glyka Nera in East Attica. The blaze, burning near a residential area, has prompted a 112 emergency alert.

The fire department spokesman Vasilis Vathrokogiannis reported to Kathimerini that the fire started in a forested area on the northern side of Mount Ymittos and is moving toward the mountain.
