Illegal gold mining surges in Brazil

The sharp rise in gold prices has driven a surge of illegal mining in Brazil, much of it in the Amazon rainforest, according to a study published on Sept. 6.    

Gold output in Brazil, the world's 14th-biggest producer last year, has soared since the coronavirus pandemic pushed international prices to record highs.    

Canadian Paratrooper Dies During Military Exercises in Bulgaria

The accident in which a Canadian paratrooper died happened during a parachute jump on Monday evening near the village of Cheshnigirovo, close to Plovdiv in central Bulgaria, the Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

The three survivors have been hospitalised at the Sveti Georgi University Hospital in Plovdiv and have no life-threatening injuries, the ministry added.

PKK weapons, ammunition seized in Turkey's Diyarbakır

A large number of weapons and rocket launcher ammunition has been found in a house that was allegedly used by outlawed Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) militants in Diyarbakır's Sur district, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Security forces tightened their measures and precautions before President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visits Diyarbakır on April 1.
