The Eiffel Tower, attacked by rust and well behind on its maintenance schedule, has taken center stage in a power struggle between the Paris mayor and her main rival, the French minister of culture.

A five-day strike at the Eiffel Tower this month drew attention to the monument's bad state of repair.

The medals awarded at the 2025 Paris Olympics and Paralympics will feature a hexagon-shaped piece of iron taken from the original Eiffel Tower in their centre, organisers said as they unveiled the design on Feb. 8.

The Eiffel Tower has been closed after a man was seen climbing up its side, reported BBC. 

The company that operates the Parisian landmark confirmed that someone was scaling the building, and that it had been evacuated as a result.

An official told AFP news agency that they were following "standard procedure", while police and specialist firefighters rushed to the scene.
