Youths and riot police clash in Exarchia

Gangs of youths rampaged through the downtown Athens district of Exarchia late Saturday and early Sunday morning, hurling firebombs and rocks at riot police units, authorities said.

Three people were detained, while an Albanian national was arrested.

According to reports, the clashes focused on the intersection of Tositsa and Patission streets.

Streets in downtown Athens to close Sunday morning for race

A running event to be held in downtown Athens on Sunday will result in traffic restrictions in the city center from 6 a.m. to noon.

Vehicles will not be allowed on Alexandras Avenue, the stretch of Patission Street between Aghiou Meletiou Street and Omonia Square, or on Tsocha Street for the duration of the Runners' Avenue race, organized by the Panathinaikos soccer club.

Athens mayor urges Toskas to step down, minister fires back

Angered by the recent spate of violence in the Greek capital, Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis called for the resignation of Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas for the second time in a week Thursday.

"How many dumpsters, how many trolley buses, how many kiosks need to be torched and how many statues destroyed before a minister has the decency to resign?" Kaminis told Skai TV.

Police attacked with fire bombs in central Athens

The area of the Athens Polytechnic in Exarchia was the scene of clashes between rioters and police units early Saturday morning.

According to reports, the clashes began after unidentified assailants threw petrol bombs at a riot police unit stationed on the corner of Marnis and Patission streets and set fire to dumpsters.

Patission was cordoned off until 5.30 a.m.

Athens protest by schoolchildren marred by violence

Traffic on Patission Street was brought to a halt for over an hour.

Riot police attacked in Athens's Exarchia district

Riot police units clashed with a group of around 40 people hurling petrol bombs in the Exarchia district of Athens early on Monday morning.

The standoff began on the corner of Tositsa and Patission streets at 1.30 a.m. and continued until around 4 a.m. and led police to cordon off Patission street.

One 26-year-old was detained.
