Two people were arrested in connection with a one-million-euro jewelry robbery near Ancient Olympia in 2018, police said on Wednesday.

The two suspects, a 43-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, face a series of charges including robbery, arson, violation of the laws on weapons and receiving and handling proceeds of crime.

An Athens magistrate has ordered eight people jailed pending trial on charges of involvement in a major gold smuggling operation.

The eight include the owner of a network of pawn shops and his secretary. The owner, Richardos Mylonas, says he has no connections with two illegal smelting sites raided by police.

An illegal gold trading network that had spread across Greece has been unraveled by police in an ongoing operation which began on Tuesday in Attica, Thessaloniki and the central town of Volos. 

According to police sources, a major operation which started on Tuesday was still underway, while large quantities of gold, silver, jewelry, as well as cash and weapons have been confiscated.
