Strong rains, winds topple trees; shipping affected

The strong rains and winds across several parts of Greece felled trees and caused power outages.

Among the hardest hit areas were some of Athens' northern suburbs.

In the municipality of Filothei-Psychiko more than 40 trees were toppled and some streets remain closed to traffic, state broadcaster ERT reported.

Wildfires rampage in Greek forests, cut large island in half

Three large wildfires churned across Greece on Aug. 7, with one threatening whole towns and cutting a line across Evia, the country's second-largest island, isolating its northern part. Others engulfed forested mountainsides and skirted ancient sites, leaving behind a trail of destruction that one official described as "a biblical catastrophe."

Piraeus Bank ATMs torched in Pefki

Unknown assailants set fire to two ATMs at the Piraeus Bank branch in Pefki, northern Athens, early on Tuesday morning.
The arson attack caused damage to the two cash machines located outside the bank branch at 43 Irini Avenue.
Police are conducting an investigation to locate the perpetrators.

Assailants damage post office in northern Athens

Police were seeking the perpetrators behind a small-scale bomb attack on a branch of Hellenic Post (ELTA) in Pefki, northern Athens, early Thursday morning.

The unidentified assailants used a homemade explosive device made of gas canisters, which detonated at the entrance of the branch on Varvaresou street at 4.10 a.m., causing damage to the building's facade but no injuries. 

Makeshift bomb damages ND offices in northeastern Athens

An explosive device set on fire a branch of ruling New Democracy in northeastern Athens early on Thursday, causing damages but no injuries, police said.
According to the authorities, the device, made of three gas canisters, went off just outside ND's ground-floor offices of a five-floor apartment building in the suburb of Pefki, at 3.45 a.m.
