Ten worst fires destroyed 280,000 hectares in 20 years
The destructive force of wildfires in Greece since 2003 has been illustrated in a study by the National Observatory of Athens, which showed 10 of the most severe ones destroyed more than 280,000 hectares of vegetation.

Earthquake recorded near Methoni
A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Methoni, in the southern Peloponnese, on Friday afternoon at 2.44 p.m. according to the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens National Observatory.
The quake's epicenter was located 20 kilometers southwest of Methoni, at a depth of 6 kilometers.

Reports: F4 fighter plane believed crashed off western Greece
Media reports in Athens on Monday morning claimed a two-seater Hellenic Air Force F-4 "Phantom" fighter plane went down during a training flight off the northwest coast of the Peloponnese (southern Greece), in the Ionian Sea.
According to the same reports, search efforts are underway to locate the two aviators who were flying the plane.
More stormy weather on the way
As parts of northern and central Greece were taking stock of the damage caused by heavy downpours on Monday, the National Meteorological Service (EMY) warned of more stormy weather sweeping across the country until the end of the week.

Light tremor recorded in Patra
An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale registered shortly before 9 p.m. in the Gulf of Patras, near Antirio, on Wednesday evening.
The quake had a focal depth of five kilometers, and it was reportedly felt across the city of Patras, northwestern Peloponnese, and also at coastal areas in Etoloakarnania.
No injuries or damages have been reported so far.

Structure believed to be long-lost temple to Poseidon unearthed in Peloponnese
The remains of a 2,500-year-old structure unearthed at an archaeological dig in the western Peloponnese may be those of a temple dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon, and mentioned by the ancient Greek geographer and historian Strabo, according to archaeologists.

Foreign Ministry sends note verbale to Libyan embassy over research vessel
The Foreign Ministry has sent the Libyan embassy in Athens a note verbale rejecting accusations that the Sanco Swift research vessel is acting illegally.
