A 35-year-old seaman, member of the crew of a Maltese-flagged cargo ship docked at the Perama shipyard repair zone, was found hanged in his cabin on Wednesday, Piraeus Central Port Authority said.

The man, a foreign national who worked as kitchen cleaner, was transferred to the General Hospital of Nikea where doctors confirmed his death. 

Police have made a second arrest in relation to Monday's deadly car chase in which a policeman lost his life in the western Athenian suburb of Nikaia.

The 29-year-old police officer died after his motorcycle collided with a patrol car during a pursuit of suspected car thieves.

Two workers were injured on the job in separate incidents in different parts of the country on Thursday, as labor groups intensified calls for more stringent safety measures and inspections at job sites. 

Workers at the Perama Ship Repair Zone, situated northwest of the Piraeus port, have initiated a fresh 24-hour strike on Wednesday in response to a fatal accident that took place on Tuesday. As part of their protest, employees will gather outside the ISAP electric railway station in Piraeus at 10 a.m., while the Piraeus Labor Center has organized a rally at Korai Square in Piraeus at 7 p.m.

Workers at the Perama shipyard repair zone called a 24-hour strike and rally at the main gate of Perama on Tuesday following the deadly accident that killed a 47-year-old crane vehicle operator and seriously injured two other workers.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Atlas shipyard in Perama, located near the port of Piraeus, on Wednesday. The shipyard is one of 24 active shipyards in the region, and Mitsotakis emphasized the significant support allegedly provided by his conservative government to Greece's shipbuilding and repair industry.

A 65-year-old man died on Monday afternoon after a head-on collision in Perama, a suburb of the port of Piraeus. 

Greek broadcaster ANT1 said the two-vehicle crash happened at the intersection of Dimokratia Avenue and Dagli Street, as a woman driving in the opposite lane veered off course, smashing into the man's car travelling in the other direction.

Greece's highest administrative court, the Council of State (CoE) opened the way for the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) to build a shipyard in the shipbuilding and repair zone at Perama, west of Greece's main port, by annulling an earlier ministerial decision blocking it, it was announced on Wednesday.

Ships remained moored in ports around much of the country on Monday as winds at sea reached up to 9 Beaufort in the Aegean.

A 15-year-old teenager who jumped into the sea at the port of Perama, western Attica, to avoid being captured by officers looking for two theft suspects was found hidden at the pier.

The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on Wednesday during a police chase, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.
