Indonesian police have detained 17 people with suspected links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) after Turkey deported them due to concerns they wanted to enter Syria, an official said on Jan. 23.

According to estimates by the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad (GSGA), over 5 million people of Greek origin are living in 140 countries around the globe. The US has the lion’s share of people of Greek descent living outside the geographical borders of the motherland, with approximately 3 million, while the European continent has 1 million (including the former Soviet states).

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant who appeared in a propaganda video by the jihadist group threatening Turkey has previously been detained twice in Turkey and released, according to information gathered by the Doğan News Agency. 

The recently identified militant, Hasan Aydın from ISIL's "Yaşar Group," was detained by police in 2012 and 2015. 

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadist who attacked the Reina nightclub in Istanbul's Ortaköy neighborhood on Jan. 1 has told police that he "doesn't regret his actions."

A man suspected for killing 39 people in an Istanbul night club on New Year’s Day was arrested by Turkish police, according to Turkish media. The alleged shooter, identified as Abdulgadir Masharipov, was captured in an Istanbul apartment during a large-scale police operation on Monday, as security source told state-run Anadolu News Agency.

Abdulkadir Masharipov, who is accused of killing 39 people and wounding 65 more in an attack on an Istanbul nightclub in the early hours of the new year, has been detained in the city's Esenyurt district, sources have confirmed. 

The attacker was caught along with his son at a luxurious apartment.
