Authorities in Varna have detained two individuals suspected of orchestrating a widespread bank phishing scam that has left countless Bulgarians reeling from financial losses.

As it was said, various hacker groups breached security systems, accessed confidential information and demanded ransoms. What should be pointed out is that, according to the information, there is no evidence that these attacks actually took place.

About 7.2 million euros was charged in the first half of 2023 to debit and credit card holders due to the 31% increase in fraud incidents which raised the amount "embezzled" from cards to €12.5 million (an increase of 29% compared to the second half of 2022).

Greece's Cyber Security Authority has issued an advisory concerning a spike in phishing attacks - that is seemingly innocent SMS messages and emails purporting to be from official agencies asking for sensitive private information. 

Following the recent allegation over data leakage on e-Devlet, the Turkish official website offering government services, the head of the presidency's Digital Transformation Office has denied such claims, stating that it is technically impossible for citizens' data to get stolen in any way.

The research shows a prevalence of cyberattacks targeting critical online infrastructure, services and computers. Inadequate public awareness and cybersecurity policies, and limited regional collaboration, have exacerbated the challenges the Balkan countries face in combating cybercrime.

Ten people were arrested on Thursday in Thessaloniki for online fraud, police said.

The suspects had created fake websites of legitimate banks through which they copied the personal information and passwords of their victims and used them to transfer large sums of money to their own bank accounts and others abroad. 

Banks are ambivalent over the provision submitted to Parliament in a Development Ministry draft law about their liability regarding fraud in online transactions (phishing).

Even if one doesn't visit a dangerous website or click on a link, attackers can break into the device and hijack data, a cyber security specialist has warned.

The Internet has introduced a platform called "cyber space," which has enormous effects even on social lives.

A new Development Ministry bill provides for the compensation of bank customers should they become victims of electronic fraud, such as the theft and use of their debit card PIN, even if this is due to their own negligence.
