Kaili in fresh bid to secure jail release

Jailed Greek MEP Eva Kaili has appealed to the highest court of cassation in Belgium in a fresh attempt to secure release from pre-trial detention.

"We went to the supreme court, because in this way we manage to go from two months to one month in order to have the right to apply for a release from prison," her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, said in a written statement.

The Seine River Overflowed its Banks in Paris

Coastal parks in the French capital, Paris, had to be closed today after the river Seine emerged from its bed after several days of rainfall, city authorities said on Thursday.

At the Austerlitz measuring point, the waters of the Seine reached 4.2 m, that is, more than 2 m above their normal level, and some low-lying pier and coastal pedestrian zones were flooded.

Mother, brother of dead publisher in suspected suicide pact

The mother and brother of Panagiotis Mavrikos, the Akropolis newspaper publisher who died in a car accident in 2016, on Wednesday plunged into the sea off a pier in Drapetsona in what authorities believe to be a suicide pact.

Sofia Mavrikou, 76, and Theodoros Mavrikos, 53, fell into the sea in their car at 11.30 on Wednesday morning, with the two family dogs in the vehicle.

Building and handling Pletna boats is a skill passed on from one generation to another and an established local tradition popular among visitors of the Bled lakeside resort.

The Bled island was a pilgrimage site already in the 12th century, with locals setting up piers and transporting people to the island. Even back then, they used boats they built themselves.
