SOCAR Turkey plans to open huge Aegean container port in September

The Turkish branch of Azeri energy giant SOCAR will open the Petlim Container Port in the Aegean Sea this September to become an alternative to Greece's Piraeus Port for container shipments, according to Kenan Yavuz, the head of SOCAR Turkey and a board member of Petkim Petrochemical Holding.

Massive new container ship docks in Piraeus

 

One of the biggest containers ships in the world, the MSC Istanbul, arrived at the port of Piraeus on Thursday.

The vessel, which belongs to one of the port’s biggest customers, Mediterranean Shipping Company SA of Geneva, was built in 2015 and can transport … 16,652 containers!

The appearance marked the first time it docked in Piraeus.

Convicted November 17 terrorist Christodoulos Xeros on Thursday was a granted a new extension in order to give evidence regarding his involvement in an alleged plan to aid members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire guerilla group to escape from maximum security Korydallos Prison last December. He was ordered to face a magistrate on June 5.

Greece missing out on cruises market rise

The last 10 years saw a reduction, of about 80%, in investments for port amenities aimed at servicing top-of-the-line cruise ships. As a result, currently recession-plagued Greece failed to take advantage of the skyrocking cruiseship sector in Europe.

The above is the conclusion of an experts’ meeting during the 3rd Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum completed Piraeus on Wednesday.

 

Piraeus Bank sells Egyptian subsidiary to Kuwaiti group Al Ahli

Good news for at least one of Greece’s four systemic banks on Thursday, as Piraeus Bank said it has sealed a deal with Kuwait’s Al Ahli Bank to sell its 98.5-percent stake in Piraeus Bank Egypt (PBE) for US$150 million.

The agreement is subject to approval by the Egyptian central bank and the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund (HFSF), amongst others.
