Romania Detains Police Officers Over Suspect’s Asphyxiation Death

A court in the town of Pitesti, 120 kilometres north-west of Bucharest, has remanded two policemen accused of culpable homicide in custody for 30 days after they were charged with causing the death of a man they allegedly mistreated, Romanian media reported on Tuesday.

Romania: Serbian killed as man plows his car into workers

A Serbian woman has been killed, while five others - two of them Serbians - have been injured in an incident that happened in a Leoni plant in Pitesti, Romania.

According to Romanian media, a 22-year-old man, identified as Andrei Cristian Caramelea, also employed by the company, drove his car into a group of workers.

Romanian Car Workers Demonstrate for New Highway

Around 8,000 people, most of them union members at the Dacia car factory in Pitesti, took to the streets of the southern town on Monday to protest about the Romanian government's failure to start work on a new highway in the south. 

The project has been discussed for years, but the government postponed it several times due to disagreements over the best route.
