Theatre legend Kani turns eye to modern South Africa

When John Kani launched his acting career in the 1960s, the only stage he could find was an empty snake pit at a shuttered South African museum.

His latest production, "Kunene and the King," opened with the Royal Shakespeare Company and played on London's West End.

It's now resuming a South African tour that was interrupted by the pandemic's theater closures.

UK’s top ballet stars leap back into spotlight

After a year of playing to empty houses, Britain's Royal Ballet dancers William Bracewell and Fumi Kaneko are eager to "celebrate what we do best" when they return to the public stage as Romeo and Juliet.

"I haven't done this, a three-act ballet for ages," Japanese prima ballerina Kaneko told AFP after a rehearsal of the famous balcony scene.

Garifallia and the burden of tradition

What's in a name, you might ask. While the case of Romeo and Juliet was a bit extreme, names do make a difference in the way one is perceived and can truly be a burden, especially when they are out of tune with the times. This is especially the case with the so-called "traditional" names, though some more than others. I ought to know. I have been lumbered with one my entire life.

Oedipus Rex | Epidaurus | July 12 & 13

A pinnacle of ancient Greek tragedy, Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex" tells the harrowing tale of a son struck by confounding misfortune when he unknowingly murders his father. The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus will present a new take on the drama, directed by Constantinos Markoulakis with music conducted by Minos Mastsas, as part of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival.
