Police in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, said a 5-year-old boy was found safe in an abandoned car a few hours after a thief stole the vehicle.

The child’s father told police he had left the boy inside the car while he went into a shop at around 2.30 p.m. Friday.

On the eve of the presidential elections, for the last three weeks, Turkey has been talking about an operation that has seen police officers place other police officers into custody.

A second operation was launched early Aug. 5 against police as part of the “illegal wiretapping” probe in 14 provinces across Turkey.

Police raided colleagues’ residences at a number addresses around Istanbul, daily Hürriyet has learned. The list of detentions include 33 police officers according to initial information.

A 49-year-old schoolteacher from Serres, northern Greece, who has been accused of sexually abusing one of his pupils was remanded in custody on Monday.

The teacher is accused of assaulting the girl, now aged 14, between the summer of 2011 and May this year.

He denies the charges but will be temporarily held at Sidirokastro police station.

Bulgaria's Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Svetlozar Lazarov will launch major police raids on the roads countrywide every Friday and Saturday night.

Starting next Friday, some 8,000 police officers will take part in the special police operation. They will inspect all vehicles, focusing on areas near drinking and entertainment establishments, Bulgarian Trud informs.
