The performance of two parties in particular that did not hold seats in the previous parliament was one of the major surprises of Sunday's general election, despite narrowly missing the 3 percent threshold to enter parliament.

The huge win by New Democracy in Sunday's election creates a whole different political landscape than the one most pundits were predicting.

"There Is Such a People" will not support the GERB cabinet. The leader of "There Is Such a People" Slavi Trifonov announced this on his Facebook profile.

The secretary-general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Dimitris Koutsoumbas, hailed his party's strong showing in the elections, especially in the urban centers and working-class neighborhoods as a promising message for the party in view of the second ballots.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was due on Monday to receive an official mandate to try form a coalition government after falling short of an absolute majority win in Sunday's election.

Mitsotakis' New Democracy party won 40.8% of the vote versus 20% for the leftist Syriza.

The participation rate of overseas residents in the 2023 elections has reached 79.6%, according to official data. 

Out of a total of 22,857 registered voters in the special electoral rolls for overseas residents, 18,203 cast their votes, while 4,654 abstained.

The "Erdoganization and Orbanization of Greece is now complete," former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said, in his first reaction to the election results that saw his MeRA25 party limp in 8th place and lose its presence in parliament.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose conservative party scored a landslide election victory Sunday but without the seats in Parliament to win outright, indicated he will seek a second election in a bid to consolidate victory without a coalition partner.

Greek Solution chief Kyriakos Velopoulos has hailed the results of Sunday's legislative elections, which saw his pro-Russian nationalist party enter Parliament with nearly 4.5 percent of the vote.

"We have been through fire and hurricane," he told journalists after the release of provisional results late Sunday.

With nearly all votes counted in Greece's general election, ruling New Democracy was on course for a resounding lead of nearly 21% early Monday morning.
