As we usher in the new year, the global population is on the verge of reaching a significant milestone, surging past eight billion individuals, with an increase of 75 million people this year alone, reports the Associated Press.

A forecast released by Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute (NSI) paints a concerning picture for the country's demographic future. By the year 2075, the projection suggests a significant decrease in Bulgaria's population, foreseeing a drop to 4,972,000 individuals, with a quarter of the populace aged 65 and above.

China has announced its first population decline in decades as what has been the world's most populous nation ages and its birthrate plunges.

The world's population is expected to reach 8 billion people on November 15 this year, the UN predicted today in a report, according to which India will overtake China as the most populous country by next year, AFP reported.

In the past decade, China has had the lowest population growth since the introduction of the one-child policy in the 1970s, whereby each couple was only allowed to have one child. This is evident from the 2020 census, of which the national statistics office announced the results on Tuesday.

Romania's resident population was standing at 19.5 million as of January 1, 2018, with a negative rate of natural increase, according to a press statement released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Thursday, July 11, World Population Day.

The population of the planet will increase by 2 billion people over the next 30 years and will reach 9.7 billion in 2050. This is predicted by a UN report on global demographic change, the French press and TASS said.

By 2100, Earth's population could reach a peak of 11 billion people, the UN says.

Figures shows that the country's population grew to 82.8 million in 2017, more than 3 million higher than in the numbers announced in December 2016. Along with the population increase, marriage and divorce rates also rose in Turkey, Daily Sabah writes.

The world's population is expected to reach nearly 7.6 billion by the beginning of 2018, the German Foundation for the World Population said. In the last year the world population has increased by 83 million, BNR reported.

The International Monetary Fund called on Asian economies to learn from Japan's experience and act early to cope with rapidly ageing populations, warning that parts of the region risk "getting old before becoming rich."
