Online gig work is growing globally, particularly in the developing world, creating an important source of employment for women and young people in poorer countries where jobs are scarce, according to a World Bank report released Thursday. 

A draft law that will be submitted to the Greek Parliament in September seeks to regulate flexible types of employment such as zero-hours contracts, where the employer is not obliged to provide a minimum number of working hours to an employee. 

These practices already exist, they are just unregulated.

Total public sector employment in Cyprus decreased by 3.3% in March 2023, compared to March 2022, according to data published by the Statistical Service (CyStat) on Tuesday.

The total number of people employed by the state declined by 1,778 and reached 52,103 people.

The Labour Inspectorate has filed criminal complaints in a case involving two temp agencies from Slovakia and retailer Engrotuš where a number of shelf fillers from abroad reportedly worked massive overtime.

German authorities have approved temporary employment of people from Türkiye to fill the staff shortage at the country's airports, but airport operators demand longer-term employment.

Under a temporary arrangement, Turkish employees will be able to work at German airports until Nov. 6.

The market for temporary labor has recorded an increase of over 19 pct in the first half of the year, most employments on temporary work projects being done on entry-level profiles, according to an analysis conducted by the Association of Human Resource Services Suppliers (AFSRU).

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor hosted a Labour Day reception on Saturday at which the head of the ZSSS trade union association Lidija Jerkič said the holiday should be an opportunity to reflect on workers’ rights, and assessed that the government was ignoring social dialogue with trade unions. Many officials also marked the holiday with their messages.

Ljubljana – The International Workers’ Day, 1 May, will this year again be marked by epidemic-related restrictions. Trade unions call for job security, decent pensions, social security but also for safety at work, so that workers are not exposed to infection. Traditional celebrations with big bonfires on the eve of the holiday will not take place.

The results of the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Survey show that 11% of 621 employers surveyed in Bulgaria expect to increase employment levels in the next three months, 5% predict a reduction in staffing and 4% are uncertain about their plans for employment until 80% are considering changing their current workforce between October and December.

Bulgaria is among the five EU countries with the lowest proportion of temporary employment, according to Eurostat's analysis of European Union labor market trends in the past year.
