Greece still in the grip of cold weather

Bad weather has a lot of Greece under its grip, with snowfall and below freezing temperatures.

In the Athens area, mostly in the northern parts, some roads are closed, police warn.

These include: the road to Mt. Parnitha, the Alimou-Katechaki road, Anapafseos Street, in the suburb of Papagou, beyond the cemetery and Fylis and Tatoiou Avenues, northwest of Athens.

First signs of Leandros appear

The Leandros cold front arrived on Friday, bringing heavy snowfall mainly to the northern regions of the country and a significant drop in temperatures nationwide. The frosty weather will continue Saturday, with the snow expected to continue unabated, even in Attica.

New toll charges take effect on January 1

A new system of toll charges based on kilometers traveled will come into effect on January 1.

Reductions in the toll rates on the Patras-Athens highway will range from 0.10 euros to 0.20 euros, on the Antirrio-Ioannina highway from 0.05 euros to 0.25 euros, and on the Corinth-Tripoli- Kalamata and Lefktro-Sparta highways frees will be reduced in certain categories of vehicles.

Extensive testing planned in large industrial units of northern Greece

Mobile units of the National Organization for Public Health (EODY) will conduct rapid antigen tests in large industrial units in the northern regions of Xanthi, Drama, Pella, Florina, Pieria and Imathia in the coming days, amid concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

Eighteen areas remain in state of alert

Authorities and health experts are closely monitoring the course of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic as it unfolds around the country with increasing concern, both in terms of the suffocating pressure it is exerting on the National Health System and its dynamics in areas outside major urban centers, such as Pella, Pieria, Grevena, Drama and Serres in northern Greece.
