European Union leaders were locked in all-night negotiations over the bloc's top jobs, but as day broke on Monday there was still no deal on who should lead its executive as political groups jockeyed for influence.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker looked back on six milestones that "shaped the euro and European Union as we know it," making particular reference to Greece and the Greek crisis. 

Manfred Weber was elected as the leader of the European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament, the Austrian public channel ORF, the FOCUS and BNT reported.

The President and Vice-President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker and Frans Timmermans, hailed the "European approach" of Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and the Romanian Government's support for the European project, on the occasion of their meeting on Tuesday in Brussels, informs the Executive's press office.

AGERPRES special correspondent Florentina Peia reports: The European leaders who participated in the informal meeting of the European Council, including President Klaus Iohannis, started on Tuesday the discussions aimed to reach an agreement on the takeover of the leadership positions of the European Union institutions.

The extraordinary European Union Summit has begun in Brussels. Leaders discuss the results of the European Parliament and the possibilities for defining the next President of the European Commission. Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov will also participate in the meeting.

President Klaus Iohannis is attending today a summit meeting of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels and an informal meeting of the European Council, also in Brussels. According to the official agenda, Iohannis will go to the EPP summit at 14:00hrs, EEST, and to the informal European summit at 19:00hrs, EEST.

EU Council President Donald Tusk announced that a new extraordinary meeting of European leaders was convened on May 28th. Its job will be to discuss candidacies for top positions in the main European institutions after the European Parliament elections.

The informal EU Summit in Sibiu will remain a remarkable moment in the history of the European project, President Klaus Iohannis stated on Wednesday, at a debate where the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, was also present.
