Light tremor hits Preveza

The coastal town of Preveza in northwestern Greece was rattled by a 3.7 magnitude tremor Tuesday.

According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute the quake occurred at a depth of five kilometers below the seabed near Aktio.

The tremor was felt in nearby Lefkada island and the Aitoloakarnania region.

Western parts of Greece bear brunt of downpours

Hundreds of homes and streets were flooded in Messolonghi, Preveza, Nafpaktos, Patra and other parts of Western Greece on Saturday due to heavy rains.

In Messolonghi in particular, local authorities had to bring out earth-moving machines to build an embankment that would help divert floodwater from the local technical college after a pumping station nearby was damaged by lightning.

Two arrested for smuggling antiquities in northwestern Greece

Two men, aged 31 and 33, on Thursday faced a prosecutor in Preveza, northwestern Greece, on charges of illegally possessing and trading in ancient artifacts.

Searches of their homes on Wednesday turned up a large number of artifacts - chiefly amphorae but also coins, jewelry and religious icons - from various periods.

He was buried with an olive branch and soil from his hometown Preveza in northwestern Greece.
