Prison population declines by over 8 pct in Turkey

The population of prisons in Turkey has decreased by 8.5 percent to some 266,831 as of Dec. 31, 2020, compared to the same day of 2019, figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) show.  

"A total of 96 percent of the inmates are males, leaving with just 4 percent female prisoners," TÜİK said in a statement on Nov. 2.

Project to recover memory of political detainees who participated in restoration works of Constanta Casino

The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER) announced on Tuesday that it will start a large project to recover the memory of former political prisoners who participated in the rehabilitation of the Constanta Casino in the early 1950s.

Private time with spouse has positive impact on prisoners: Justice Ministry

Turkey's Justice Ministry has praised a 2013 policy to reward well-behaved convicts and arrestees with a "pink room" - a room to spend time with their spouses in private - for having a positive impact on prisoners. A total of 54,002 convicts were rewarded with pink room visits over the past three years, the ministry said.
