Excessive taxes funded the government's Christmas handouts
The increased taxes on corporations and households, as well as higher consumption taxes, brought the Greek economy to its knees last year, according to the definitive data for the 2016 budget that the Finance Ministry released on Tuesday.

Expired debts to the state keep growing by the month due to taxpayers' inability to meet their obligations.
In October taxpayers left taxes of 1 billion euros unpaid, while unpaid taxes amounted to 10 billion euros by the end of that month. Add to that debts to the state from previous years and the sum soars to 92.2 billion euros.
