Fire in eastern Athens appears under control
A big fire that spread quickly overnight in an eastern suburb of Athens appeared to be under control soon after dawn Monday.
The fire had raced up the slopes of 1,026-meter (3,366 feet) Mount Hymettus, which separates suburban Peania from the main city. Flames shooting up the mountain on what was a pretty extensive front could be seen from Athens early Monday morning.

Shock over drownings of three young holidaymakers
Tragedy struck the islands of Crete and Rhodes on Wednesday afternoon after an 8-year-old girl from Israel and two French sisters aged 16 and 19 drowned in separate incidents.
The Israeli girl drowned in the swimming pool of the hotel she was staying at with her family at the resort of Hersonissos on Crete.

Any witness to campus violence will be able to call police, says minister
Any student or citizen witnessing an incident of violence inside a university campus will be able to call the police, Education Minister Niki Kerameus said on Tuesday, referring to the planned abolition of the so-called university asylum law.
The government said it will table a bill next week on the law which prevents police from entering university grounds.
Swimming safety guidelines issued
The National Public Health Organization (EODY) on Wednesday issued a series of guidelines aimed at reducing the number of drownings at Greece's beaches, advising people with children to be vigilant at all times and to opt for locations that have a lifeguard service.
