Int’l Istanbul Puppet Festival starts at Fişekhane

The 25th International Istanbul Puppet Festival, which aims to introduce the art of puppet, meets puppet lovers in Istanbul's Fişekhane.

The event opened on Oct. 27 and will continue through Nov. 4 with performances by international puppeteers at Fişekhane Black Box Stage for both adult and child audiences.

The Mairivi puppet theater workshop is hosting a permanent exhibition of puppets that has been put together by final-year students at Panteion University's Department of Communications, Media & Culture. The aim of the show is to challenge stereotypes concerning prevailing perceptions about puppet theater, and particularly the notion that is it intended only for children.

Puppet Theater | Athens | March 9-11

Karromato, a Czech marionette company that is renowned for its vintage puppets and old-school narrative, is in Athens for three shows at the Mairivi Theater with the entertaining and humorous production "Wooden Circus." Shows start at 8 p.m. on Friday, 5 p.m. on Saturday, and noon on Sunday, and tickets cost 10 euros.

Little Beaver & The Echo | Athens | Winter

Writer Panayotis Tsiridis's adaptation of Amy MacDonald's children's book "Little Beaver & The Echo" is on stage in a puppet theater production every Sunday this winter season at the Gloria Mikro Theater in Athens. The performance features puppet theater master Anneta Stefanopoulou as well as actors Christina Platanioti and Constantinos Karvouniaris. Shows start at noon.

Sesame Street's first Afghan Muppet empowers girls

With purple skin and an orange nose, her multi-colored braids wrapped in a headscarf, Zari is Sesame Street's first female, Afghan muppet and she has a message: girl power.

Producers hope the character, who debuted on the local version of the show this month, will provide a much needed boost to gender equality in a country where girls still trail behind boys across the board.

World puppets in ?zmir

The 9th ?zmir International Puppet Days kicked in the western province on March 5.

This year, 40 puppet theater groups will perform 42 shows in 27 different venues within the festival program. Four exhibitions, one from Slovenia and another from Bulgaria, will host art lovers.
