Struggle for survivors of fire trying to return to normalcy
Survivors of last month's deadly blazes on the outskirts of Attica are struggling to cope while experts are warning of the public health risks posed by toxic ash in the afflicted areas, Kathimerini has learned.
Applications for wildfire aid reach 1,761 in three days
Applications by fire victims to receive compensation for the destruction caused by the deadly blaze that burned through the east coast of Attica on July 23-24 reached 1,761 in three days, the Infrastructure Ministry said on Friday.
The ministry has pledged to support households and businesses affected by the fire by paying out a lump sum of 5,000 euros.

The decision concerns buildings for which final demolition rulings have been issued.
Divers pull body out of water in fire-ravaged east Attica
Greek coast guard officials with the help of divers on Monday pulled an unidentified body out of the water near Kokkino Limanaki in east Attica, an area ravaged by a deadly blaze a week ago.
According to the coast guard, the body was transferred to the port of Rafina.
Ferry rams into port of Rafina
A Greek catamaran passenger ferry carrying 215 people onboard crashed into the port of Rafina, in eastern Attica, on Monday, according to reports. No injuries were reported.
"Flyingcat 4," which connects Rafina to the islands of Tinos, Naxos, Ios, Sikinos and Folegandros, was trying to dock when the collision happened.

But then came a hint of life — the frail feline began crying out and slowly moving her tiny body, singed by heat and flames.

She got into her car soon as she finished work on Tuesday afternoon, laden with donations made by friends and relatives, and headed out to the municipal indoor gymnasium of Rafina in eastern Attica. It was not the first time that Selena Gomez, a member of the Glyfada branch of the Greek Guiding Association had headed to a disaster site to help in day-after crisis management.

Government announces relief measures for Attica fire casualties
As the death toll from the destructive fire in eastern Attica rose to 81 on Wednesday, rescue teams continued the effort to find dozens of people who remained unaccounted for.
More specifically, some 130 army and fire brigade personnel were continuing the search for the missing, whose numbers are difficult to determine.
