Rome to Ban Diesel Cars From City Centre by 2024

Rome, one of Europe's most traffic-clogged cities and home to thousands of ancient outdoor monuments threatened by pollution, plans to ban diesel cars from the centre by 2024, its mayor has said.

Virginia Raggi announced the decision on her Facebook page on Tuesday, saying: "If we want to intervene seriously, we have to have the courage to adopt strong measures".

City traffic restrictions end for summer

As of Friday, and for the next few weeks, Athenian drivers will not have to look out for the sign showing they have entered the city center's restricted traffic zone. The restrictions are based on whether a vehicle's number plate ends in an odd or even number. The system is designed to reduce congestion in downtown Athens but is suspended every summer due to reduced traffic.

Traffic restrictions in central Athens to return Monday

Restrictions on vehicles entering central Athens return on Monday, October 10, authorities have announced.

Vehicles with license plates ending in even numbers can enter the city center on even days of the month, whereas those whose license plates end in odd numbers are allowed to circulate on odd days.

The restrictions will be lifted on July 21, 2017, authorities said.
