Property buyers appear excluded from the acquisition of newly built houses and flats, even if many have stood unsold for as many as five years after they were built.

Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK) has fined an apartment manager 1,000 Turkish Liras ($162) for discrimination after he urged residents of the apartment building not to rent their flats to students living without their families or bachelors.

Just two days after submitting legislation to Parliament outlining a new framework for the protection of overindebted borrowers from foreclosures, the government on Thursday submitted an amendment watering down that protection after coming under pressure from the country's international creditors. 

Far from sticking to its guns, the government has yielded significant ground on the new foreclosure protection framework, a draft of which was tabled in Parliament late on Tuesday and will be put to a vote on Thursday.

Following strong disagreements with creditors over the level of protection from foreclosure of debtors' primary residence, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos outlined the elements of the bill finally tabled by the government in Parliament on 26 March.

He said the draft legislation will come to a vote within the week.

The Finance Ministry is planning to include an additional 2,000 districts across the country in the system of taxable property rates known as objective values.

Sources say that the whole of Greece will have been included in the system by the end of the first quarter of 2020, which means a total of some 7,500 districts will be incorporated.
