The main goal of Turkey's Zero Waste regulation is to prevent waste, rather than waste recycling, said an expert on environment.

In the EU, an estimated 42% of plastic packaging waste was recycled in 2017. In seven EU Member States, more than half of the plastic packaging waste generated was recycled in 2017.

It is estimated that by 2050 the weight of plastic in the oceans will be greater than the weight of fish in it. The Municipality of Pigadakia in the southern Athenian suburb of Voula is launching a pilot program for Greece's first source-sorting waste management system.
