Rare-earth metals are a group of 17 elements that, along with other critical raw materials, are used in the production of a wide range of high-tech products, from smartphones, computers, wind turbines and electric car batteries to defense equipment, lasers, optical fibers and aircraft engines.

Türkiye's recent discovery of rare earth elements will give a major advantage to the country in the near future, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez has said.

"As the name suggests, these elements are rarely found around the world," Dönmez said on Jan. 28 at an event titled "Energy Goals in Century of Türkiye" in Istanbul.

The magnet was recently discovered to have been made with a cobalt and samarium alloy that came from China

After Serbia's government on Wednesday revoked a key decree greenlighting Rio Tinto's controversial lithium mining project, activists said they did not trust government promises that the mining project is over for good, fearing what might happen after elections in April.

Turkey's Eti Maden Lithium Production Plant inaugurated in the country's central province of Eskişehir on Dec. 26 will help prevent annually $20 million lithium imports, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez said.

The molecules, containing carbon and hydrogen, are locked in rocks that are 3 billion years old. Scientists also discovered that the amount of methane gas in the Martian atmosphere changes with the seasons, although the cause of these fluctuations was not clear.     

The Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik is reporting that Serbia remains the only site anywhere in the world of "the new mineral" jadarite.

The mineral was discovered in 2006 in the country's western Jadar River Valley, and according to preliminary estimates, the deposits there can cover at least ten percent of the global demand for such highly sought-after elements as lithium and borate.
