Voters in 21 EU countries cast ballots on Sunday as elections for the European Parliament reached a crescendo in the Western world's largest democracy.

The European Commission remained silent on Tuesday (26 September) when confronted with the news that Spanish authorities had shut down websites that provide information about this weekend’s Catalan independence referendum. A vote that Spain still maintains is illegal.

In a statement to the media, the Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced that it has not published the official results of the referendum held on Sunday.

The statement was issued after information appeared in the media that the results of the referendum have been manipulated.

 Voter activity was nearing 20% in a national referendum Bulgaria is holding alongside local elections, a polling agency has said.

Bulgarians are asked to have a say on whether online voting should be allowed as a recognized method in elections and nationwide polls.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has performed a U-turn and ruled out holding a European Union membership referendum on May 5, 2016, a shift to placate some of his own lawmakers who were opposed to it being held on the same day as local elections. 

Several of the biggest fund managers based in London are drawing up plans to move trillions of pounds of assets and thousands of jobs outside of Britain should the country vote to leave the EU in a referendum due by the end of 2017, the Sunday Times said. 

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said a British referendum on whether to leave the EU was "very risky", ahead of a visit by Prime Minister David Cameron to Paris on May 28.

British voters will be asked to vote "Yes" or "No" on remaining in the European Union in a referendum to be held by the end of 2017, media reported May 27.

British EU referendum bill collapses

LONDON -- The British ruling coalition has failed to adopt a bill to organize a referendum on Britain's membership in the EU.

With this, parliamentary procedures regarding the bill have been halted.
