Health Ministry calls for implementation of mosquito control measures

The Health Ministry has sent a circular to regional authorities across the country asking them to initiate their annual mosquito control programs, calling for particular attention to be paid in areas where there have been outbreaks of malaria and West Nile virus in previous years.

UN agency warns of sexual violence at Greek refugee camps

The United Nations refugee agency is urging Greece's government to provide separate housing and washing facilities for women and children at island refugee camps, citing the risk of sexual violence.

The UNHCR says it has received reports from about 180 camp residents who say they have suffered some form of sexual or gender-based violence after arriving in Greece.

Sergeant who refused to serve at refugee camp cleared by court

A military court in Thessaloniki has exonerated an army sergeant who was charged with refusing to serve at a refugee camp in Derveni, northern Greece, last year.

The court accepted the sergeant's claim that serving at the camp was not part of his responsibilities.

He had initially been disciplined on charges of insubordination last November.

Greece, Europe and the refugee crisis

There is an irony to the phrase "European refugee crisis." If you are in Africa, the Middle East or South Asia, you know that the refugee crisis is felt most acutely in countries neighboring those in conflict. Now is the time for Europeans to address the seriousness of the issues we face. Greece is a good place to start, since it has been in the eye of the storm.
