Greece Wants to Speed up Repatriation of Asylum Seekers to Safe Turkey

Turkey is a safe country for most asylum seekers now housed on Greek islands, Greece's migration ministry has said, as Athens seeks to speed up repatriations to its eastern neighbour.

According to a 2016 agreement between the European Union and Turkey, the latter should take back Syrian refugees from Greece if they do not face serious risks in Turkey.

EU envoy to Turkey visits famed Göbeklitepe site

The head of a EU delegation to Turkey visited the famed ancient site of Göbeklitepe on May 27. 

Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut said as part of his visit to southeastern Şanlıurfa province that he was happy to be in the cradle of humanity in Göbeklitepe - known as the world's oldest temple and listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

UNGA head to visit refugee camps in Turkey

Volkan Bozkır, The Turkish diplomat heading the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said on March 31 that he will depart on his first official trip since taking office to visit Turkey, Qatar and Azerbaijan.

He said his stops will include Hatay in Turkey where he will meet Syrian refugees and visit the U.N. cross-border humanitarian mechanism.

Turkey hosts over 3.6 mln Syrian refugees: Interior minister

Turkey is currently hosting more than 3.6 million Syrian refugees, the country's interior minister said on March 31. 

"The number of Syrians under temporary protection in our country is 3,664,873," Süleyman Soylu said, addressing immigration officials in the northwestern Balıkesir province at an annual evaluation meeting.

Education, health remain EU’s priority in helping Syrian refugees in Turkey: Envoy

The European Union's preferred areas in lending the millions of Syrian refugees a helping hand will continue to be education and health, the EU's envoy to Turkey has said, as European leaders will discuss how to continue cooperation with Turkey at a summit on March 25 and 26.
