Religious icons shot on Thasos island

Church authorities on the northern Aegean island of Thasos have ordered locks to be placed on two chapels after a man opened fire on their icons, depicting Jesus and the Virgin Mary, with an air gun.

The vandalism was discovered on the Epiphany holiday last Monday by shocked worshippers who visited the chapels of Agia Marina and Agios Vasileios outside the island capital of Limena.

Andros and Tinos were left without power on Tuesday after the two lines supplying the Aegean islands were damaged as a result of bad weather in the area, supplier DEDDIE said.

According to an announcement, technical crews were working to restore supply to the two islands of nearly 18,000 inhabitants, with efforts focusing on getting a power station on Andros up and running.

Transfer of asylum seekers to Piraeus delayed due to bad weather

The transfer on Thursday of 635 asylum seekers belonging to vulnerable groups from the hotspot on Samos in the eastern Aegean to a former army base in Ritsona north of Athens was delayed due to bad weather.
The Nissos Chios ferry boat which was scheduled to transfer the asylum seekers from Samos to Piraeus remained docked at the port of Mytilene οn Lesvos.

Ferry services to Kefalonia, Zakynthos islands shut down

Very strong winds have cut off passenger shipping routes to the island of Kefalonia, as a long-awaited weather front begins to make itself felt.

Winds are blowing up to Force 9 speeds (75-88 km per hour).

On the island of Zakynthos, a ferry service from the Peloponnese operated Sunday afternoon, but the route is expected to shut down until Monday morning.
