3.3 earthquake hits Lefkada

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake hit the Ionian island of Lefkada on the west coast of Greece, Friday. The tremor struck at a shallow depth of less than 5km with the epicentre 17km northwest of the island. No damage was reported, with seismologists disassociating it with the activity in central Italy.

Island mayors to ask EU envoy for migrant transfers to Greek mainland

European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos is to meet in Athens Thursday with the mayors of the five eastern Aegean islands that are hosting migrants, with the talks expected to focus on ways of decongesting overcrowded reception facilities and speeding up the processing of asylum claims.

Greece Halts Trucks from Bulgaria over Bad Weather

Greece has halted trucks entering via two border crossings from going on in direction to several key cities over severe weather conditions.

The restriction is in force as of 10:00 local time (EET) on Thursday for Ilinden-Exochi and Kulata-Promachonas border crossing points, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry says.

Five islands left in dark from short circuit at power station

The Aegean islands of Paros, Naxos, Ios, Sikinos and Folegandros were left without electricity on Wednesday after a short circuit resulted in damage to the wider region's central power station on Paros.

According to the Public Power Corporation (PPC), the outage occurred at 10.50 a.m. while it said power was expected to be restored later on Wednesday.

Snow makes comeback in central, northern Greece

Authorities in the areas of Ioannina and Volos in northern and central Greece were struggling on Tuesday with a new wave of snow following last week's cold snap.

Schools in many parts of both areas were ordered to remain closed, as snow and ice made driving treacherous in many parts of the city's outskirts and at higher altitudes.

Ferryboat crashes onto island dock; no one injured

A passenger ferry on Thursday morning crashed into the dock at the port of Chios in the eastern Aegean.

The Nissos Mykonos ferry, operated by Hellenic Seaways, was reportedly struggling against strong winds and choppy seas as it came into port shortly before 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, bumping violently against the concrete dock.
