Final countdown for AKP-CHP coalition

Although the leaders of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Republican People's Party (CHP) failed to produce a breakthrough on a coalition agreement at their Aug. 10 meeting, they made progress on content, leaving aside the contentious issues of tenure and the model of a possible government partnership, which are to be addressed at their next rendezvous scheduled for Aug. 13. 

Fikret Otyam laid to rest after a ceremony

A ceremony was held yesterday at the Ankara Contemporary Arts Center for famous painter, journalist and author Fikret Otyam, who died on Aug. 9 at the age of 89 in the southern province of Antalya. 

The ceremony began with a moment of silence and continued with a speech delivered by Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu.

Turkey is heading fast to an ambiguous but dreadful situation. The leaders of the country's two biggest parties will be meeting Aug. 10 for a final push to form what is called a "grand coalition" but prospects are dim.

Thousands attend demonstration on peace in Istanbul

Thousands gathered for a demonstration in Istanbul's Bak?rköy district on Aug. 9, to call for peace in an event organized by the Peace Bloc, which consists of around 80 civil society organizations and is supported by the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and some deputies from the Republican People's Party (CHP).  

PM calls for unity against violence before coalition meeting with CHP

Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu has called on all political parties to take a common stance for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to lay down arms only one day before a key meeting with the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) to conclude weeks of coalition talks.
