Beijing preps COVID-19 hospital spaces, though new cases low

Beijing is preparing new hospital facilities to deal with a spike in COVID-19 cases, even though the numbers of new cases remain low.

State media reported Tuesday a 1,000-bed hospital at Xiaotangshan in the northeastern suburbs built for the 2003 SARS outbreak has been refurbished in case it's needed.

There is an uptick in young children who need hospital treatment, including in intensive care. One of the reasons is that respiratory viruses circulated at very low levels during the epidemic due to anti-coronavirus measures.

The Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reports that in the last 24 hours, 28 deaths have been recorded in patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Also, two deaths prior to the reference interval were reported, both in August 2021, in Hunedoara and Timis counties. According to GCS, in total, it is about 15 men and 15 women admitted to hospitals across the country.
