Twenty people arrested in Saturday's operations to remove people from two squats in central Athens will be tried Monday on various charges, all misdemeanors.

The charges include disturbance of the peace, attempt to inflict serious bodily damage, serious damage of property and violence against police.

Six police officers were injured during the operation.

Lower court prosecutor Vangelis Ioannidis has ordered an emergency probe of a 18 December police raid in Koukaki where riot police went to evacuate an occupied building and ended up raiding the next door house and beating the owner, known director Dimitris Indares, who with his two sons were on the roof of their home.

Riot police raided an anarchist haunt in the central Athens district of Exarchia late Thursday and early on Friday as tensions continue to mount in the area. 

That day, in Bucharest's Victory Square, after a group of demonstrators tried to storm the government building, riot police dispersed the crowd with water cannons and tear gas. Many ordinary protesters were beaten by policemen using batons. The fracas left more than 400 needing medical attention.

New clashes broke out on Friday afternoon between riot police and migrants near the Diavata reception centre in northern Greece, after a new group of people tried to break through police lines in a bid to reach the border.

An order issued by the Greek Police (ELAS) for the transfer of officers from various departments to boost riot police units in Athens and Thessaloniki has prompted an angry response from the union representing police workers, who complain that all departments are understaffed.

Scores of people have filed complaints against the Romanian Gendarmerie and prosecutors have launched a probe of the military security force's violent intervention against anti-corruption protesters.

The Guardian - Tens of thousands of protesters have rallied in cities across Romania against the ruling Social Democrat (PSD) government, with riot police in the capital, Bucharest, firing tear gas into the crowd and hundreds needing medical attention.
