Greek summer season begins with short-staffed Fire Service
The summer season in Greece is at the outset, but daily Ta Nea reports that the country’s Fire Department is short-staffed. Several fire trucks are immobiliized due to lack of tires and spare parts. Aircraft are very old and therefore are grounded while the Department also faces shortages in basic equipment due to drastic reductions in funding.

Powerful 7.8 quake shakes Japan
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Japanese coast Saturday, geologists said, shaking buildings in Tokyo and setting off car alarms, an AFP correspondent reported.
Despite the huge power of the quake, there was no risk of a tsunami, The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported.

351 Turkish workers killed on the job in 2015, report reveals
At least 139 workers died as a result of workplace hazards in March 2015, with the total death toll exceeding 351 over the first three months of 2015, according to a report by the Turkey-based Workplace Health and Safety Assembly.
Seven to face 15 years in deaths of 3 workers at third bridge site
Seven people are facing prison terms of up to 15 years on charges of reckless homicide in an accident which killed three workers during the construction of a viaduct for Istanbul's third bridge on April 5, 2014, according to the indictment.
The accident was "predictable and preventable, and happened as a result of imprudence and carelessness," according to an expert's report.

Strong undersea quake occurs off island of Milos, felt in Athens
An earthquake rattled southern Greece early on Friday and was widely felt in the capital, Athens. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury and no tsunami warnings.
The U.S. Geological Survey gave a preliminary magnitude of 5.6, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Center gave it as 5.8. It is common for different seismology centers to give varying magnitudes.
Bulgaria OKs Disaster Risk Management Peer Reviews by EU Countries
Bulgaria's caretaker government has decided to allow experts from the European Commission to examine its capacity to manage disaster risks.
The peer reviews may be conducted on the basis of a decision of the EU concerning the Union's Civil Protection Mechanism, which envisages the creation of a common framework for disaster risk prevention.
Traces of tsunami discovered in Gökçeada
Archaeological work on the island of Gökçeada has revealed that an earthquake occurred in the region 4,700 years ago, followed by a tsunami.
Ãanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Geology Department Professor DoÄan Perinçek said they had found the traces of the earthquake and tsunami during works between 2006 and 2008.
