,,On average, by 20%, road accidents increase in July and August compared to the other months of the year.

Over 56,000 Bulgarian drivers have taken part in this year's SDIndex (Safe Drive Index) initiative. The study, supported by several institutions, aims at introducing a national index for identifying risks in the behaviour of motor vehicle drivers in Bulgaria.

A National Coordination Center for Safe Road Traffic is being established, the government decided today. 

The main task of the new center is to reduce the response time for heavy road accidents or the occurrence of temporary obstacles on the roads as a result of severe weather conditions or other force majeure circumstances.

Although fatalities due to road accidents involving cars and motorcycles have dropped an impressive 44 percent since 2010, safety levels on Greek roads remain low compared to the European Union average.

According to a national survey, nearly 2.5 million are active drivers in Bulgaria, and human factors are among the main causes of road accidents. It is therefore very important to explore the different groups of drivers, that are the main mistakes they make on the road and what has led to them.

From May 19 to May, a traffic police operation for the control of trucks and buses is carried out on the territory of the country. It is part of the calendar of TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, and similar actions take place in the territory of all Member States.

Every day in our country there are an average of 18 road traffic accidents, and 10% of them are fatal for some of the participants. This was stated by the chairman of the State Agency "Road Safety" Malina Krumova.

This week is marked as World Road Safety Week, which the United Nations marks 6 to 12 May, the State Agency for Road Safety announced.

They compared well to the deadliest year in a while, 2013, which saw 199 road deaths.

However, over a decade, the country has made no real progress and is just back where it started.

According to European Commission data on road deaths in the 28 member states for last year, 25,100 people died on European roads in 2018, representing a rate of 49 casualties per 1 million people.

Judicial authorities and the University of Crete in Iraklio have joined forces to curb juvenile traffic offenses on the southern island's notoriously poor road network.

The Interior Ministry has launched a public campaign across the country to raise awareness on protecting pedestrians in traffic.
