Ljubljana – Ivan Simič, the director general of the Tax Administration, stepped down on Wednesday, announcing his decision just minutes after the new government was sworn in. Simič, a staunch supporter of the Janez Janša government, was named to the post in acting capacity in May 2021 before getting a full five-year term in November the same year.

Ljubljana – The United States has congratulated Prime Minister Robert Golob and the new Slovenian government on their confirmation by parliament. According to the US Embassy, the US is looking forward “to continuing to advance global security and prosperity through our combined efforts in NATO and international organizations.”

Ljubljana – PM Robert Golob said his ministerial team features experienced politicians and experts as the government must be operational right away. “We don’t want a government of newcomers that would need a 100-day grace period because we know we will not have it,” he said as he presented the 17 nominees to the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Ljubljana – The National Assembly elected Robert Golob prime minister in a 54:30 vote on Wednesday, just over a month after his Freedom Movement won the general election in a landslide on a pledge to thoroughly reform the way politics is done in Slovenia.

Ljubljana – In his address to parliament ahead of a vote on his becoming prime minister-elect, Robert Golob identified tackling problems in healthcare and containing rising energy and food prices as the first priorities of his emerging government. He underscored social justice, solidarity and knowledge-based society as their guidelines.

Ljubljana – Deputies of the Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi), who are to be in the opposition in the new term, said that Robert Golob could not count on their support as the National Assembly is taking a vote on the prime minister nominee on Wednesday. They nevertheless said constructive cooperation with the new government was a possibility.

Ljubljana – The Freedom Movement, the party that won the 24 April general election, and its prospective coalition partners, the Social Democrats (SD) and the Left, would like to form a government by 3 June and will set out the distribution of ministerial briefs between them by the end of the week after the first round of official talks on Tuesday.

Ljubljana/Koper – Robert Golob, the head of the Freedom Movement party that has convincingly won Sunday’s general election, is expected to meet President Borut Pahor informally on Tuesday as the most likely candidate for the prime minister-designate. Talks with the Social Democrats (SD) and Left on forming a new coalition are also expected tomorrow.
