Protest rallies gathered thousands of people in several Romanian cities on Saturday evening; people were condemning the conditions of the November 2 first round of the presidential election for voters abroad. Social media was an important tool in convening those claiming solidarity with the Romanian emigration and chanting anti-governmental slogans.

The Constitutional Court of Romania certified on Friday the first round of the presidential elections from Nov. 2 and established that standing in the runoff will be Social Democrat Prime Minister Victor Ponta and Liberal leader Klaus Iohannis.

The second round of voting will be held on Nov. 16, the Court announced.

The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, UDMR, a junior member of the coalition headed by the Social Democratic Party, PSD, on Thursday left its supporters to choose who to support in the second round of the presidential elections, scheduled for November 16.
