Russia's reaction to the 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence

The Serbian foreign minister on Wednesday addressed a ministerial conference of the Movement (NAM) in Baku, Azerbaijan, calling on all countries to "continue to oppose the unilateral attempts of so-called Kosovo at affirming its aspirations to membership of international organizations."

According to the Belgrade-based newspaper, the reason are "the changed circumstances" - since, beside Spain, Romania and Cyprus - also EU members who do not recognize Kosovo - are close to deciding not to attend the main discussion at the summit.

The Serbian presidency announced this is a statement late on Wednesday, adding that Vucic informed Putin about the latest events in Kosovo and Metohija, particularly about the brutal attack on Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Marko Djuric, who was beaten by Albanian forces through no fault of his own."

Mitchell, who was in Pristina on Monday, also said he did not bring with him any concrete plans on this issue.

He told a news conference, held after a meeting with the president of the interim Kosovo institutions, Hashim Thaci, that he had not come to present any kind of plan to anyone.

Dacic has been given this award for his merits in strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The comment, made after Dacic's meeting in Belgrade with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, was prompted by Hashim Thaci saying that Belgrade "would be able to step out of the false mythology" if Russia recognized Kosovo.

Dacic told a joint press conference with Lavrov that the Greater Albanian rhetoric is the biggest threat in the region.

This is a rare example of any two nations in the world, the Serbian president said.

Vucic said he asked the senator to help by asking Kosovo Albanians "to be prepared for genuine solutions, which mean compromise."

According to the Kosovo president, the Kosovo authorities "assumed certain responsibilities and obligations" and "will fulfill them in accordance with the agreements reached," writes Pristina-based Albanian language outlet Koha.

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has told AFP that he hopes to strike a "historic agreement" with Serbia in 2018.

"I think that 2018 is a crucial year and should be a decisive one. Otherwise, we will drag on for decades," Thaci said.
