Dense fog engulfs Istanbul, disrupts traffic

An intense blanket of fog enveloped Istanbul in the early hours of the Feb. 29 morning, disrupting traffic and causing flight delays.

The fog intensified around the high and northern regions of the Bosphorus and around Trans-European Motorways (TEM) spanning Ümraniye, Kavacık, Altunizade, Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Yavuz Sultan Selim bridges.

British Airways launches flights between Sabiha Gökçen and Heathrow

British Airways has launched flights between Sabiha Gökçen Airport on Istanbul's Asian side and London's Heathrow.

The inaugural flight touched down on Sabiha Gökçen on June 1.

The new route between Sabiha Gökçen and Heathrow will operate four times per week on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays on a mix of A320 and A321 aircraft, the Turkish airport said in a statement.

Helicopter’s tail hits lighting pole in Istanbul

A gendarme helicopter's tail hit a lighting pole when it was trying to get into a parking position at an Istanbul airport on Dec. 31. 

The accident took place at the Sabiha Gökçen Airport and police, fire brigades, and health professionals were dispatched to the scene following the accident.

There was no disruption in airport traffic due to the accident.

Istanbul Photo Awards’ exhibition opens at airport

A second exhibition featuring a selection of the awarded photographs at the international news photography competition Istanbul Photo Awards 2020 opened on Nov. 27 in Istanbul.

The exhibition, organized by Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency with the sponsorship of Turkish Airlines (THY), will run for a month at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.

Pilot of Pegasus airplane that skidded off Istanbul airport runway arrested

An Istanbul court has ordered the arrest of the captain pilot of a Pegasus Airlines plane that skidded off a runway at Istanbul's Sabiha Gökçen International Airport earlier this month, killing three people and injuring 179 aboard.

Mahmut Arslan was sentenced on charges of "causing death and injury by negligence" before being taken to Maltepe Prison in Istanbul.
